Marrakesh, Morocco

La Palmeraie, Marrakesh

Marrakesh has been on the top of my travel destinations list for a long time. I have seen it featured in a many movie and shows, and for a while there my social media feed used to feature a lot of pictures from people who have just visited Morocco. Inspired by the beautiful pictures I started looking into sites and cities within Morocco to explore. I am a member of many travel group pages on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, twitter, Pinterest, etc. And whenever I have an upcoming trip, I usually search within those group pages what people who have already traveled to these destinations are saying about their experience. I particularly remember paying closer attention to comments from women who went there solo. One common issue that was mentioned by many of the solo traveling women was the cat calling and being harassed by men.

I visited Marrakesh, Morocco solo in early 2018 and had an amazing time. The food was good, and the Moroccan mint tea was delightful. I learned that speaking in Arabic with vendors and Taxi drivers comes with a great discount. Also saying that I was from South Sudan rather than California, USA gave me an additional discount.

I stayed in Meridien hotel, not far from the Medina and within walking distance to restaurants, mall, and fun nightlife spots. I walked the streets during the day and took taxi in the evening hours.

The people were overall friendly and quick to invite you over for teatime or a meal with their families. Something I would have considered if I was not traveling alone. I politely decline their invitations, but I never say no to the Moroccan mint tea they offer on the spot.

I would consider visiting Marrakesh again in the future. Most likely during the off season when there are not too many tourists in town. Have you been to Marrakesh?
